MontaVista rev’s carrier grade distro for 4G

MontaVista Software announced a new release of its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 compliant Linux distribution for networking customers, adding support for 4G wireless networks including LTE and WiMAX. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.1 also integrates OpenSAF High Availability (HA) capabilities and is the first to offer virtual routing and forwarding, says MontaVista.

Carrier goes negative on iPhone in Droid ads

Verizon Wireless has tipped details about an upcoming Android phone in TV ads that hype a “Droid” phone while bashing Apple's iPhone, says eWEEK. Meanwhile, the Boy Genius Report has published a first-look preview of the Motorola Droid (previously called the “Sholes”) and calls it “the Android device to beat.”

Low-energy Bluetooth debuts

Texas Instruments (TI) says it is now sampling a SoC (system-on-chip) supporting the “Bluetooth low energy” standard. The CC2540 will become more widely available in early 2010, permitting devices to operate for more than a year on tiny button cell batteries, the company says.

PC/104+ module uses one-Watt SoC

Aaeon has announced a PC/104+ CPU module with a DMP Electronics Vortex86SX processor and 256MB of DDR2 memory. Targeting military, terminal, and transportation markets, the “PFM-535S” has dual Ethernet ports, four USB ports, and an onboard CompactFlash socket, the company says.

Next-gen Atoms to launch Jan. 3?

Intel will launch its new generation of Atom processors, code-named “Pineview,” on Jan. 3, according to reports by the Fudzilla website. The CPUs — known as the Atom N450, D410, and D510 — will extend netbook battery life and may allow HD video playback, among other previously cited advantages.

Linux-based robot sub wins top award

Cornell University undergraduates have developed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that runs Debian Linux on a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The 50-inch mini-sub won first place in the 12th annual Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, and was the first AUV to complete the entire course since 2002.

WiFi goes peer-to-peer

The WiFi Alliance says it is working on a specification that will allow devices to connect to one another directly, without the assistance of a router. “WiFi Direct” will be published “upon completion” and certification of devices will begin in 2010, the organization says.

Industrial computer boasts fault resilient booting

Taiwan-based Artila Electronics announced a Linux-ready, ARM9-based box computer that runs on only three Watts of power and offers “fault resilient” booting from 2MB of data flash. The fanless Matrix-504 incorporates a 400MHz Atmel AT91SAM9G20 processor, and offers Ethernet, serial, and USB connectivity, says the company.

ARM9 microcontroller gains Linux development support

Timesys announced that it is providing the first commercial Linux development support for NXP Semiconductors' LPC313x series of ARM9-based microcontrollers. The “LinuxLink for LPC313x” offering enables developers to build custom Linux-based products on the 180MHz ARM926EJ-S-based processor, says the company.

First Atom-powered Android netbook debuts

Acer and Amazon announced pre-sales for the first Android-powered netbook running on an Intel Atom. Acer's Aspire One AOD250-1613 netbook offers a 10.1-inch display, gesture-enabled touchpad, and a dual-boot system in which Android handles 18-second boot-ups, enabling users to seamlessly switch between Android and Windows, says the company.

Android phone taps Snapdragon SoC

Acer announced its first Android smartphone, which will also be the first Android phone based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. The Acer Liquid offers a WVGA touchscreen, HSPA 3G support, plus Android 1.6, and reportedly also provides WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a five megapixel camera.

Dell’s Android phone confirmed

Dell has confirmed that its Android phone will launch in the U.S. next year, says eWEEK. In other Android news, Samsung is prepping a “Galaxy Lite i5700” for Europe, a music-oriented phone is coming from INQ, Spotify, and Telia, and Verizon is spinning a MiFi-enabled phone, say various reports.

World’s smallest Linux networking server?

Lantronix announced its latest XPort embedded networking module, which it touts as the “world's smallest Linux networking server.” The XPort Pro measures 1.33 x 0.64 x 0.53 inches, and offers 8MB of SDRAM, 16MB of flash, RJ45 Ethernet and serial ports, a web server, SSH and SSL security, and IPv6 support.

Rugged automation box PC supports Core Duo

Kontron announced a fanless, Mini-ITX-based box PC that supports Intel Celeron or Core Duo CPUs and consumes 37 Watts. The Kontron Concept Box 751 offers three gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, four serial ports, a 2.5-inch HDD bay, and an IEEE1394 Firewire port, says the company.
