Rugged automation box PC supports Core Duo

Oct 13, 2009 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 7 views

Kontron announced a fanless, Mini-ITX-based box PC that supports Intel Celeron or Core Duo CPUs and consumes 37 Watts. The Kontron Concept Box 751 offers three gigabit Ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 ports, four serial ports, a 2.5-inch HDD bay, and an IEEE1394 Firewire port, says the company.

The Concept Box 751 is designed for challenging industrial environments, as well as medical, transportation, or digital signage applications, says Kontron. The 2.9 x 9.8 x 10.2 automation PC is the first of Kontron's Concept Box embedded computers to be "based on a standard product." Presumably, the latter refers to the 986LCD-M/mITX Mini-ITX motherboard (pictured below).

Kontron says its Concept Box 751 comes with the 986LCD-M/mITX board, up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, and a choice of CPUs — either a 1.06GHz Intel Celeron or a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo LV. A 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive (HDD) bay and a CompactFlash socket are provided for storage, and a PCI Express slot is available for expansion.

As pictured above, the computer offers extensive I/O on its front panel, including three gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, one serial port, and an IEEE1394 Firewire port. Other ports include HD audio I/O, PS/2 connectivity, and a VGA port, with DVI offered as an option via an ADD2 extension card. The rear panel, meanwhile, provides three additional RS232 ports and two USB interfaces, says the company.

Powered via a 24VDC external supply, the computer's maximum consumption is 37 Watts, says Kontron. The Concept Box 751 offers shock and vibration resistance (see spec list below), as well as operating temperature support between 0 and 50 deg. C (122 deg. F). The box is said to offer a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) rating of 40,000 hours. Assembly options are available for vertical, horizontal, and rack mounting, says Kontron.
