Intel debuts Atom dev program, tips Moblin for Handhelds

Intel has launched an Intel Atom Developer Program, offering SDKs, tech support, and an online store to netbook software developers. This week's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) also included a demo of a MID-oriented Moblin 2.1 for Handhelds, showing off mobile telephony capabilities.

MIPS-based energy monitoring system runs Linux

RMI Corp. announced a design win for its MIPS-based Au1250 processor in a Linux-based home energy monitoring system. Threshold Corp.'s Au1250-based device monitors and manages energy consumption in real time, and appears to incorporate the company's NFC-based “BlueSpot” auto-configuration technology.

Cortex-A8 SoCs use 45nm fabrication

Samsung Electronics announced two system-on-chips based on ARM's Cortex-A8 cores, with the S5PC110 aimed at high-end smartphones, and the S5PV210 targeting portable computing devices, such as netbooks. Both SoCs are fabricated with 45nm technology, clocked at 1GHz, capable of 1080p video, and imbued with “intricate low power architectures,” says Samsung.

Atom-based portables run OpenSUSE Linux

TabletKiosk announced three portable computers running OpenSUSE Linux 11 on Intel Atom processors, two of them seven-inch UMPCs (ultra mobile PCs) with built-in Wacom digitizers. The UMPCs are the Eo a7330D and the ruggedized TufTab a7230XD, joined by the 12.1-inch Sahara NetSlate a230T tablet, according to the company.

$300 tablet runs Ubuntu Linux on AA batteries

NorhTec has announced a tablet computer that will cost just $300, run Ubuntu Linux on a 1GHz SoC (system-on-chip), and operate via eight AA batteries. The “Gecko Info Pad” will include an 8.9-inch touchscreen display, 8GB of solid state storage, and needs no external power brick, the company says.

Notebook reference designs sport Nano, HD video

Via has announced two new motherboards for products it calls “netnotes,” splitting the difference between the netbook and notebook monikers. The Surfboard VT6549 and VT6552 offer HD video playback, courtesy of the VX855 chipset, and are also offered inside built-up “NetNote Turnkey Systems,” the company says.

Internet radio touts touchscreen interface

Pure announced a touchscreen-based Internet radio that also supports FM, DAB, and podcast playback. The Sensia offers a 5.7-inch, 640 x 480 color touchscreen, WiFi, and network media streaming, and includes touch-based apps like weather, news, Picasa, Facebook, and Twitter.

Linux debugging environment adds Atom support

Arium announced the release of Linx hardware and software debugging components that now support Intel's Atom CPU. Version 7.7.1 of the SourcePoint debugging software also adds code trace and flash programming functionality, together with Arium's now-Linux-ready ECM-XDP3 hardware emulator, says the company.

SBC offers SUMIT and PC/104 connectors

VersaLogic announced an SBC (single board computer) combining SUMIT (stackable unified module interconnect technology) interface with an ISM (industry standard module) form factor. The “Ocelot” offers fanless operation with 1.6 or 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPUs, three PCI Express x1 lanes, and a connector for SPX expansion modules, says VersaLogic.

CompactPCI board touted for 10 Watt power draw

Kontron announced a 3U CompactPCI board based on the Intel Atom N270, boasting soldered components and 10 Watt power consumption. The Linux-ready CP305 comes in a 4HP version with dual gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 ports, or a developer-focused, dual-slot 8HP version with additional I/O, says Kontron.

Mini-ITX board supports HD video

Ibase is shipping a Mini-ITX motherboard said to offer HD video playback. The MI941 is equipped with an LGA775 socket for Intel Core 2 and Intel Celeron CPUs, provides PCI and PCIe expansion, and offers gigabit Ethernet, USB, and serial connectivity, says Ibase.

Linux distro boasts CGL 4.0 compliance for MIPS

Wind River announced that Wind River Linux 3.0 for MIPS now complies with the Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 networking equipment specification maintained by the Linux Foundation (LF). The CGL 4.0 support extends to MIPS64-based multi-core processors from Cavium Networks and RMI Corp., says the Intel-owned company.

Intel nettop boards get Linux fast-boot tech

Phoenix announced an agreement to bundle its Linux-based HyperSpace fast-boot environment with Intel “nettop” motherboards equipped with the Intel Atom230 and 330 CPUs. Due in the fourth quarter, the Intel mobos will run the new Moblin version of the “instant-on” HyperSpace distribution, which is primarily targeted at Windows users.

Linux-based picture frame adds Internet radio, widgets, multimedia

HP announced an ARM-based digital picture frame enhanced with multimedia capabilities, Internet radio, and widget-based clients for services such as Facebook and Pandora. The HP DreamScreen provides a 10- or 13-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, 2GB of RAM, WiFi, Ethernet, and dual card readers, says HP.

PowerPC SoC family gains multi-core members

Freescale Semiconductor has announced a quad-core “P4040” version of its eight-core QorIQ P4080 system-on-chip (SoC), aimed at networking, military, and industrial applications. The company also announced a new power-efficient dual-core “P1022” member of its Linux-ready, PowerPC-based QorIQ family.
