PowerPC SoC family gains multi-core members

Freescale Semiconductor has announced a quad-core “P4040” version of its eight-core QorIQ P4080 system-on-chip (SoC), aimed at networking, military, and industrial applications. The company also announced a new power-efficient dual-core “P1022” member of its Linux-ready, PowerPC-based QorIQ family.

Rugged CompactPCI SBC runs Linux

Aitech Defense Systems has released a rugged 3U single-slot CompactPCI single-board computer (SBC). Targeting embedded and harsh environment applications, the Linux-compatible C800 SBC offers an Intel Core 2 Duo clocked at up to 2.2GHz, 8GB of SATA flash, plus dual gigabit Ethernet and serial ports, says the company.

Dual ARM core design claimed twice as fast as Atom

ARM Holdings has announced two dual-core implementations of its Cortex-A9 processor, newly capable of achieving clock speeds above 2GHz. Code-named “Osprey,” the designs have the potential to offer more than double the performance of Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270, says the UK-based firm, which joined the Linux Foundation this week.

Linux stacks target industrial, medical sectors

Wind River launched a partner validation program to offer pre-validated middleware stacks integrated with Wind River Linux and VxWorks for the industrial and medical markets . The initial partners for the Wind River Partner Validation Program are Acontis Technologies, Esterel Technologies, KW-Software, and Softing AG, says the company.

PDA development kit gets SD slot

Toradex is now sampling a revised design kit targeting creation of customer-specific PDAs. The “Limestone” kit, version 2.0, features an 806MHz Marvell PXA320 processor, a “rich” board-to-board extension interface, plus an optional battery, case, and cover, the company says.

Linutop announced the third generation of its compact Linux-based PC. Larger and with twice the memory of previous models, the Linutop 3 has a 1GHz Via C7 CPU, gigabit Ethernet, dual SATA ports, and PCIe expansion, the company says.

Android tablet plays 720p video

Archos is shipping the Android version of its media-oriented Archos 5 Internet Tablet. The Archos 5 runs on a Texas Instruments OMAP3x SoC and comes in flash (8GB to 32GB) or hard drive versions (160GB to 500GB), with a 4.8-inch, 800×480 touchscreen, 720p video, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth, says Archos.

Handset vendor tips first Android phone

LG Electronics announced its first Android phone, the Europe-targeted, keyboard-enabled LG-GW620. In other Linux-related smartphone news, HTC plans to dump Windows Mobile for Android on its next-generation “Touch HD 2,”and a Samsung phone compliant with the LiMo spec is heading for Vodafone, industry reports claim.

COM Express module has SD slot

Aewin has introduced a 3.7 x 3.7-inch COM Express module sporting Intel Atom Z5xx CPUs. Touted as ideal for “low-power, fanless” applications, the CM-7305 includes an SD slot and up to 2GB of RAM, two PCI Express x1 lanes, fast or gigabit Ethernet, and six USB ports, the company says.

Embedded Nehalem CPUs have integrated I/O

In advance of its annual developer forum next week, Intel has announced “Nehalem”-based processors targeting embedded and storage applications. Code-named “Jasper Forest,” the new Xeon CPUs range from a single-core processor with a 23-Watt TDP, to a quad-core processor with a 85-Watt TDP, and include an integrated I/O hub, the chipmaker says.

Home smart grid system runs Linux

Control4 announced a home energy management system designed for “smart grid” interaction, and announced version 2.0 of its Linux-based Control4 Home Automation software. The Control4 Energy Management System (EMS) 100 combines an “EC-100” home area network (HAN) controller with ZigBee-enabled “WT-100” wireless thermostats and energy-management software, the company says.

Amid controversy, Microsoft launches open source group

In the same week Microsoft was accused of playing dirty tricks against Linux, the software giant spun off its first open source organization. Emerging from the group behind Microsoft's first open source Linux release this summer, the CodePlex Foundation will enable the “exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open source communities.”

New GPS modules slash power consumption

U-blox, the Swiss provider of GPS technology, has announced GPS modules it says are more sensitive and use 60 percent less power than its previous offerings. The U-blox 6 will also offer a shorter TTFF (time to first fix) and stronger acquisition of weak signals, the company says.

Linux-ready STB boasts PVR features

Amino Communications announced its latest Linux-based, HD-ready IPTV set-top box (STB), in a compact, fanless box that offers PVR (personal video recorder) functionality. The fanless A532 supports 720p and 1080i video and 1280 x 720 graphics resolutions, and ships with a 160GB hard disk drive (HDD), says the British company.

Adlink has announced an “entry level” COM Express module for medical, automation, test, and industrial control applications. The Express-ATC includes a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, three PCI Express x1 lanes, gigabit Ethernet, two SATA ports, and optional SSD (solid state disk) storage up to 8GB, the company says.
