Linux kernel developers increase by 10 percent

The Linux Foundation has published an update to a study it first did last year regarding Linux kernel development. For each kernel release there has been a 10 percent increase in the number of contributing developers, delivering 2.7 million lines of code and a 42 percent increase in patch acceptance, the study reports.

Nokia’s Linux smartphone previewed

[Updated: 6PM] — A technology site has published specs, photos, and Maemo 5 screenshots from the Nokia RX-51 smartphone. Heir to both Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet and N97 smartphone, the RX-51 (N900) runs the former's Linux-based Maemo OS instead of Symbian, and is a “true mobile powerhouse,” according to Mobile-Review.

ARM9 SoC has mixed-signal analog onboard, too

Freescale has announced an ARM9 SoC (system-on-chip) aimed at a bevy of consumer electronics applications. The i.MX233 includes a 454MHz core and adds mixed-signal technology such as analog audio, integrated power management, and a monaural audio amplifier, the company says.

Box PC has Atom, optional PCI slot

Datasound Laboratories has announced a pair of Linux-ready, fanless box PCs employing 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processors. The ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 include hard disk and CompactFlash storage, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, plus both VGA and DVI video outputs, the company says.

Palm seeking submissions for App Catalog beta

Those developing applications for the Linux-based Pre smartphone can now submit them to be considered for inclusion in an upcoming “Palm App Catalog” beta. The test version of Palm's online store will open in mid-September, the company said in a blog posting yesterday.

Drone takes wing with Linux PCs onboard

Parvus Corporation has announced a successful test flight for the Aurora Excalibur, an unmanned attack drone using two Linux-based DuraCOR 820 embedded PCs. Offering autonomous vehicle management and flight control, the Excalibur allows operators to focus on mission objectives, according to the company.

Mobile processor market competition will heighten, In-Stat says

Analyst firm In-Stat expects the mobile processor market to see heightened competition in the second half of 2009, as x86 chip makers continue to drive down power consumption and ARM vendors grow the performance of their processors by adding more cores. In-Stat also expects to see the mobile processor market grow 22.3 percent by 2013, reports eWEEK's Jeffrey Burt.

ARM11 MID runs Android

Shenzhen State Micro Technology (SMiT) has announced a MID (mobile internet device) that's claimed to run Android 1.5. The MID-560 has a five-inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution, a 667MHz Samsung S3C6410 processor, GPS, WiFi, and up to 8GB of flash storage, the company says.

Netbook runs Ubuntu

Denver-based System76 is selling a netbook that includes preinstalled Ubuntu 9.04. The Starling includes a 10-inch display, the usual Intel Atom N270 CPU, a 160GB hard disk drive, and a six-cell battery, the company says.

HTC stylus to work with multi-touch screens

HTC has applied for a patent on a magnetic stylus that can be used with capacitive touchscreens. The device could allow future mobile phones to offer multi-touch, as found on Apple's iPhone, while also providing precise operation with legacy applications.

Dell Android smartphone released?

Dell has released a new Android-based smartphone for the Chinese market, according to some reports. The relatively basic Mini 3i includes a three megapixel camera and Bluetooth, but doesn't offer WiFi or 3G, according to an eWEEK.com story by Michelle Maisto.

Fanless industrial PC has PCI slot

Nexcom has introduced a fanless PC that runs Linux on Intel Celeron or Pentium CPUs. The NISE 3100e includes a PCI expansion slot, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, four serial ports, and CompactFlash or hard disk storage, the company says.

Industrial PC supports Core 2 Duo fanlessly

Ibase has announced an industrial PC claimed to run fanlessly even with a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor on board. The AMI402 includes two PCI expansion slots, VGA and DVI video outputs, two gigabit Ethernet interfaces, plus IEEE 1394 and S/PDIF ports, the company says.

Rugged UMPC targets military applications

Virginia-based Technology Advancement Group (TAG) announced a ruggedized UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) aimed at emergency services, military, and industrial applications. The TC-100 Commander includes a seven-inch display that comes in sunlight- or night vision-readable versions, the company says.

Ubuntu netbook is colored to match

Berkeley, Calif.-based system integrator ZaReason is selling a netbook that includes Ubuntu, and even is available with a matching “mocha” case. The Terra A20 includes the usual Intel Atom N270 CPU, a 10-inch display, a 160GB hard disk drive, and an optional internal cellular modem, the company says.
