Motorola Solutions spins ruggedized Android tablet

Motorola Solutions announced a ruggedized, seven-inch Android 2.3.4 tablet for enterprise users. The ET1 tablet offers a dual-core, 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of flash memory, a 1024 x 600 pixel display with extra thick Gorilla Glass, and an eight-megapixel camera with barcode reading capabilities, the company says.

ATandT announces five Android phones, including Mot’s Atrix 2

AT&T announced five new Android phones, led by the 4.3-inch, dual-core Motorola Atrix 2 and four-inch Samsung Captivate Glide QWERTY slider phone, both running Android 2.3 on dual-core processors. The other new AT&T Android phones include the 3.2-inch, QWERTY-enabled Samsung DoubleTime, the four-inch Pantech Pocket, and the ZTE-built AT&T Avail, which is available under the carrier's GoPhone prepaid brand.

Review: Free software runs Android apps from within Windows

BlueStacks announced that a free alpha version of its software allowing Windows 7 users to run Android apps is now downloadable — so naturally, we had to give it a try. The initial BlueStacks App Player comes with ten apps and allows an additional 26 to be installed, while a related Cloud Connect service allows pushing apps from a user's phone to his or her desktop PC, the company says.

MontaVista’s IVI stack hosts Android and HTML5 in virtual containers

MontaVista Software announced a Linux-based Genivi-compliant in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) software development solution that can support multiple Linux, Android, and HTML5 secure sessions on different screens within a car. The MontaVista Automotive Technology Platform (ATP) integrates SELinux security, MontaVista Linux's secure container implementation, and an in-house HTML5-based “Modii” browser, says the company.

Sixth and most powerful E-Fun NextBook tablet surfaces

E-Fun announced the sixth, highest-end member of its Nextbook family of Android tablets. Running Android 2.3 on a Rockchips RK2918 Cortex-A8 processor, the $300 Nextbook Premium 8 offers an eight-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive display, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, and a front-facing camera, and a Kobo eBook Store app, says the company.

Pixel Qi touts new transflective displays

Pixel Qi announced two new transflective liquid crystal displays, promoted as being viewable in bright sunlight and providing devices with a significant power savings. They include a seven-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, and a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 screen that provides power even when its backlight is completely turned off, according to the company.

Mini-PC available in 14 flavors

Icop announced a fanless, 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.4-inch mini-PC equipped with a 1GHz Vortex86MX CPU. The eBox-3300MX is available in 14 models — with varying levels of SATA (one port), serial (up to three ports), GPIO, and audio connectivity — and features 512MB RAM, an SD slot, a VGA port, a 10/100 Ethernet port, and three USB 2.0 ports.

Linux-based access point uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for proximity marketing

iSign Media Solutions announced a Linux-based device designed to send out marketing messages via either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Including an integral web server and the ability to communicate with digital signage PCs, the “Smart Antenna” is an all-weather device that draws five Watts of power over an Ethernet cable, says the company.

Latest MyTouch phones feature help wizards

T-Mobile announced two mid-range Android 2.3 (“Gingerbread”) phones from LG Electronics, featuring set-up wizards and how-to guides for novice users. The 3.8-inch MyTouch and the 3.5-inch, QWERTY slider MyTouch Q are equipped with 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, five-megapixel cameras, and support for T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network.

Embedded Linux Conference Europe features Torvalds, free LinuxCon Europe pass

The Linux Foundation and CE Linux Forum announced a schedule for the Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE), set to take place Oct. 26-28 in Prague. Co-located with LinuxCon Europe, ELCE 2011 offers 50 presentations on Linux and Android — including projects such as Genivi, Yocto, Linaro, and possibly Tizen — plus speakers ranging from Linus Torvalds to Intel's Dirk Hohndel.

Smartphones (and Android) move forward again

Amidst steadily growing smartphone usage, Google's Android garnered a record 43.7 percent of the U.S. market by the end of August, according to comScore. Meanwhile, the needle didn't budge much for Apple or Microsoft — now at 26.6 and 5.8 percent, respectively — with customers apparently waiting for the release of a new iPhone or the “Mango” update to Windows Phone 7.

The SuperNova offers a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 4GB internal storage, a seven-inch, 800 x 600 screen, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, says the company.

Aaeon announced a ruggedized “5.25-inch” single board computer (SBC) that's available with Intel Atom N455 or D525 processors, and comes with PCI, PCMCIA, PC/104+, and Mini PCI expansion. The PCM-LN02 offers up to 2GB of soldered-on DDR3 memory, a Compact Flash slot, plus dual gigabit Ethernet ports and six serial interfaces, among other I/O.

Ronetix announced a open-frame panel PC based on Atmel's 400MHz, ARM926-based AT91SAM9G45 processor and intended as a development platform. Now supporting Android as well as Linux, the SK-PM9G45 Starter Kit incorporates a CPU Module PM9G45 with 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash, a seven-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen, and a baseboard with serial, Ethernet, USB, and optional Wi-Fi connectivity, says the company.

Samsung teases Nexus Prime, moves to block Apple 4S in Europe

Hoping to steal some attention from Apple's iPhone 4S, Samsung flashed the side of its Android Ice Cream Sandwich-equipped Nexus Prime — expected to be unveiled next week — in a YouTube video. Meanwhile, it filed preliminary injunction motions in Paris, France and Milan, Italy, hoping to block iPhone sales in those countries due to claimed WCDMA patent infringements.
