Atom-based SBC is replete with expansion capabilities

Oct 6, 2011 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Aaeon announced a ruggedized “5.25-inch” single board computer (SBC) that's available with Intel Atom N455 or D525 processors, and comes with PCI, PCMCIA, PC/104+, and Mini PCI expansion. The PCM-LN02 offers up to 2GB of soldered-on DDR3 memory, a Compact Flash slot, plus dual gigabit Ethernet ports and six serial interfaces, among other I/O.

The 8.0 x 5.75-inch PCM-LN02 follows the "5.25-inch" form factor, and supports either an Intel Atom 1.66GHz, single-core N455 or dual-core, 1.8GHz D525 processor. It also includes the Intel ICH8M chipset, says Aaeon.

With the N455, the board ships with a fanless heatsink while the D525 model comes with a fan-equipped heatsink, says the company. In either case, the PCM-LN02 offers 2GB of soldered-on DDR3 667/800 MHz memory.

The PCM-LN02 supports a wide range of embedded applications, with its ruggedization support and ability to tolerate operating temperatures between 32 and 140 deg. F (0 to 60 deg. C). Potential uses are said to include molding machines, meat weight measurement devices, and control rooms, as well as security, industrial automation, and transportation equipment.

Meanwhile, the board's numerous USB 2.0 and RS-232 ports are said to support parking lot and convenience store applications that need to connect to coin machines or card readers, says Aaeon.

The PCM-LN02 features extensive expansion opportunities, starting with a CompactFlash Type II interface and dual SATA 3Gbps interfaces. Additional expansion includes PCI, PC/104+, and PCMCIA interfaces, as well as two Mini-PCI card interfaces, says the company. Meanwhile, the board is said to support simultaneous VGA and 18-bit (or optional 24-bit) LVDS displays.
