Security appliance uses Intel SoC

Portwell has announced a network appliance that uses Intel's EP80579 SoC (system on chip) and targets security and IP telephony applications. The CATO-3000 features seven gigabit Ethernet ports, PCI Express x4, 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch hard drive expansion, and Intel's QuickAssist technology, says Portwell. (more…)

GNOME Mobile hits the road

The GNOME project has formally released the mobile version of its Linux desktop environment. GNOME Mobile is based on the GNOME 2.24 desktop that was released this week, and is targeted at mobile phones, handhelds, and other devices with constrained display, input, and system resources. (more…)

Linux-based IP STB swaps media with cell phones

KDDI has announced a Linux-based IP set-top box (STB) that converts and transmits TV and Web content to the Japanese carrier's cell phones. Based on Motorola's VIP1830 hardware platform, the “Au Box” also plays back music stored on the phones, and offers CD ripping, says KDDI. (more…)

Digital piano adds Linux

Stockholm-based KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) has established a research center to foster collaboration between academia and industry on embedded system design. DVR prototype runs uClinux

Minsk, Belarus-based Promwad Innovation Company says it used uClinux to create a digital video recorder (DVR) prototype. Based on an Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) Blackfin BF533 DSP (digital signal processor), the “JPEG2000 DVR” prototype encodes images in the Motion JPEG2000 format. (more…)
