Panasonic Mobile Communications is shipping another LiMo (Linux Mobile)-compliant phone for NTT DoCoMo's FOMA network. The FOMA P706ie offers a 3-inch QVGA display, a 2-megapixel camera, a 2GB or 8GB memory card, voice clarification, and video record and playback at up to 15fps, says Panasonic. (more…)

Intel ships dual-core Atom

Intel says it is now shipping the promised dual-core version of its Atom processor. Designed specifically for the affordable desktop computers Intel calls “nettops,” the “Intel Atom Processor 330” has a 1.6GHz clock speed, 1MB of second-level cache, and an eight-Watt TDP, the company says. (more…)

Massively multicore SoCs run Linux

Tilera announced a second generation of its scalable, 64-core Tile64 family of SoCs (system-on-chips). The TilePro family, which includes the 64-core TilePro64 and 36-core TilePro36, doubles cache size and improves cache management, while also benefitting from upgraded Eclipse-based Linux development tools, says the company. 3.5-Watt thin client runs Linux

Chip PC Technologies announced a Linux version of its compact thin client. Based on an RMI Alchemy Au1250 processor, and running on a claimed 3 to 3.5-Watts of power, the Xtreme PC LX offers onboard multimedia acceleration, domain authentication, and Active-Directory-based management, says the company. SGI frees up GL-related licensing

SGI has radically simplified the license covering its OpenGL Sample Implementation, GLX, and other accelerated 2D/3D graphics software releases. Moving from five pages to three paragraphs, the new version of the SGI Free Software License B mimics the free X11 license, a non-copyleft license similar to the BSD license. (more…)

Nokia Linux tablets go 3G, OMAP3

Nokia's Linux-based web tablets may soon gain faster processors and built-in 3G cellular modems. Nokia executive Ari Jaaksi revealed today in a keynote at the Open Source in Mobile show that Nokia will add 3G/HSPA capabilities to an OMAP3-optimized Maemo 5 release for the tablets. (more…)

Netbook sports 320GB hard disk

Czech vendor Eltrinex has announced a netbook computer that runs Linux or Windows XP Home Edition, and sports a 320GB hard drive. The “MobilePC” includes a Via C7-M ULV processor, 10.2-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, and a bundled external DVD writer, the company says. (more…)

A London, UK startup called VCA Technology has announced the beta release of its Linux video analytics software suite for TI Davinci SoCs that combine RISC and DSP cores.
