Italy-based KDev has found another use for its tiny, cellular radio-equipped Linux box. In its newest “Easy Guardian” iteration, the Acme FoxBox works as a network monitor that uses ICMP pings, SNMP scans, and text messaging to alert users to network events. (more…)

Linux gets security black eye

As has been widely reported, the maintainers of Debian's OpenSSL packages made some errors recently that have potentially compromised the security of any sshd-equipped system used remotely by Debian users. System administrators may wish to purge authorized_key files of public keys generated since 2006 by affected client machines. (more…)

Microsoft frees poor children from Linux struggles

Microsoft has announced an agreement with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) that will make Windows XP available on the non-profit's low-cost laptops for third-world children. Thank goodness third world children will no longer have to struggle to learn Linux, one tongue-in-cheek commentator observes. (more…)

Atom-based ECX board runs Linux

Portwell has announced a single-board computer (SBC) using Intel's Centrino Atom chipset and ECX (embedded compact extended) form factor. Targeting applications such as kiosks and digital signage, the PEB-2736 supports dual displays, has a CompactFlash slot, and accepts an optional TPM (trusted platform module), says Portwell. (more…)

Tiny boards gain Linux cross-tools support

[Updated 4PM] — Gumstix says its tiny ARM-Linux SBCs now support the OpenEmbedded (OE) build environment. In addition to pre-built Linux images, the company now offers a “gumstix-oe” collection of source files and bitbake recipes, for those wishing to use the open source cross-compilation environment. Cross-platform tools vendor announces awards, earnings

Trolltech announced that Valgrind won first prize and Synergy and Vim won second prizes in its inaugural Qt Open Source Development Awards honoring the best open-source development tools. In other news, Trolltech announced first quarter earnings of about $11 million US. (more…)

Little thin client runs Linux

The Italian firm CompuMaster has introduced a compact thin client that runs Linux. The “Praim Ino” can be mounted on the back of a monitor, draws just six Watts, and comes with a variety of client software, the company says. (more…)

Atmel is now sampling an ARM9-based system-on-chip (SoC) that runs Linux and targets “power-constrained applications that also need high performance.” The AT91SAM9G20 consumes a maximum of 80mW, has twice the clock speed of its predecessor, four times the cache, and a host of standard interfaces. Linux wins big in financial trading

Red Hat announced that a European branch of the the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has implemented its Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Red Hat Network. NYSE Euronext is using RHEL for key components of its “mission-critical,” high-speed financial trading environments, Red Hat said. (more…)

Verizon Wireless, seven others join Linux phone org

[Updated May 15] — Verizon Wireless has chosen Linux as its “platform of choice,” it said. Starting with feature phones in 2009, followed by iPhone competitors, Verizon will offer Linux phones compliant with specifications from the Linux Mobile Foundation (LiMo), an industry group it and seven other companies joined today. Android Developer Challenge announces first-round winners
