Low-end RAID controllers support Linux

Adaptec has announced a new family of entry-level RAID controllers that support RAID 0, 1, and 10. The Series 2 RAID controllers ship with open-source Linux drivers and are designed for controlling low-cost SATA and SAS disk and tape-drive systems, says the company. (more…)

Wind River joins open source high-availability group

Wind River Systems has joined the OpenSAF Foundation, which aims to standardize high-availability (HA), open-source middleware for Linux-based carrier-grade systems. Wind River will contribute to the OpenSAF project, joining founding members Emerson Network Power (ENP), Ericsson, HP, Nokia Siemens Networks, and Sun Microsystems. (more…)

Thin clients bulk up on software

Thin client vendor Bosanova has announced an alliance with Ericom Software, in which the former's hardware products will be bundled with the latter's client software. Ericom's PowerTerm WebConnect clients provide access to Windows terminal servers, hypervisors such as VMWare or XenServer, and legacy hosts, says Bosanova. (more…)

New COM design claims extra robustness

MEN Micro has introduced a new COM (computer-on-module) standard, along with two Linux-compatible modules based on it. Push email gains ad-friendly Web 2.0 app integration

A vendor of push email software and a vendor of web-based applications for mobile devices have released a jointly produced mobile communications suite. Funambol and Lazlo say their joint offering provides mobile users with push email and web-based email, contacts, and scheduling applications, while offering service providers easy advertising integration. Lightweight browser ported to Linux-friendly DSP

Japanese phone stack vendor Access has ported its lightweight NetFront Browser (pictured at left) to support Analog Devices' (ADI) Blackfin digital signal processor (DSP). The combined, Linux-compatible technologies are aimed at Internet-enabled devices such as the IP set-top boxes (STBs). (more…)

Web-based app server ported to tiny ARM9 CPU module

Real Time Logic (RTL) has ported its web-based application server to an ARM9-based CPU module from Digi Embedded Solutions. The Linux-compatible BarracudaDrive app server is now available for Digi's ConnectCore 9P 9360 core processor module, which is available in a new Linux-based hardware/software development kit. Linux-ready SDIO controller supports multiple memory cards

QuickLogic has upgraded its SDIO host controller IP (intellectual property) with support for multiple, independent memory cards. Available for three different QuickLogic FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), the SDIO PSB (“proven system block”) targets handheld devices that require more than the typical 8GB available per memory card, says QuickLogic. Balanced XIP and the AXFS filesystem

This whitepaper compares four approaches to storing program code on flash memory, including eXecute-in-place (XIP), fully shadowed, demand paging, and “balanced” XIP. ARM-based controller has StackableUSB expansion

Micro/sys has announced the first single-board computer (SBC) combining its StackableUSB expansion bus with an ARM-based Intel XScale processor. Intended as an industrial controller or protocol converter, the RCB1626 runs Linux, has dual 10/100 Ethernet ports, and operates from -40 to 85 degC, the company says. (more…)

Intel multi-core threading library supports Sun Studio
