Linux-oriented SoCs target multifunction STBs

Open source foundations team up for Hong Kong conference

[Updated Nov. 19, 2007] — The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and the Eclipse Foundation planned to host a summit to reflect the fast growth of the open source movement in Asia. Originally announced for Nov. 26-30, 2007, the show has been postponed to “mid-2008,” organizers say. (more…)

PCIe video capture card supports Linux apps

Adlink Technology has introduced a PCI Express video capture card aimed at surveillance and machine-vision applications. The PCIe-RTV24 is said to capture and display four channels of video at rates up to 30fps per channel, and is available with Linux support. (more…)

MicroTCA minions connect in Munich

Embedded Linux service provider presents at Euro CELF-con

Telecom DSPs gain Linux virtualization

Cellular base stations can now harness digital signal processors (DSPs) for general-purpose control-plane functions as well as signal processing, according to VirtualLogix. The company has ported its VLX-NI virtualization layer and Linux kernel for network infrastructure equipment to Texas Instruments DSPs used in base stations and other networking data-plane applications. SFLC, BusyBox, Monsoon dismiss GPL lawsuit

On Oct. 30, the Software Freedom Law Center, acting on behalf of the two principal BusyBox developers, and Monsoon Multimedia jointly announced that an agreement has been reached to dismiss the GPL enforcement lawsuit, which had been filed by the SFLC. (more…)

WiFi chip cuts standby power to “near-zero”

Atheros has announced a new “game-changing” WiFi chip said to cut power consumption drastically on mobile devices. The Atheros AR6002 “Radio on Chip for Mobile” (ROCm) draws “near-zero” power when in standby, and 70 percent less power than previous WiFi technologies when active, the company claims. (more…)
