ARM spins multicore-enabled Cortex core

ARM Ltd has started shipping a multicore-enabled version of its top-of-the-line application processor core for complex OSes such as Linux. The “Cortex A9” will support four-way architectures, clockspeeds over 1GHz, and single-core applications requiring four times the performance of ARM11 within a 250mW power envelope, ARM claims. Trolltech porting Qtopia Core to Windows CE

Trolltech has released a “technology preview” port of its Qt development framework to Microsoft Windows CE. The Qt/WinCE download is said to include nearly all of Qt's 400 C++ class libraries, with the goal of letting developers build Linux, Mac, Windows, and Windows CE binaries from the same code base. Real-time, embedded Linux conference finalizes agenda

Qt, Qtopia to gain lightweight HTML rendering engine

[Updated Oct. 6] — Trolltech will integrate the Webkit html rendering engine into forthcoming versions of its development frameworks for desktop and embedded applications. The lightweight engine — already used in Apple's iPhone and Nokia S60 phones — could help Qt and Qtopia users more easily web-enable a variety of applications and mobile devices. (more…)

Trolltech co-CEO to step back

Trolltech has announced that on Nov. 1, company co-founder and co-CEO of 13 years Eirik Chambe-Eng will reduce his involvement due to eyesight difficulties. Current co-CEO Haavard Nord will serve as sole CEO, while Trolltech will commence searching for a suitable COO (chief operations officer). (more…)

Dynamic profiler needs no instrumentation

At its Developer's Conference today in Santa Clara, Calif., ARM unveiled a dynamic analysis tool said to require no instrumentation, among other interesting features. DLNA middleware interconnects consumer devices

Access has announced a middleware suite aimed at enabling mobile phones and other embedded devices to interoperate with digital consumer appliances such as storage devices, TVs, cameras, hard-disk recorders, and printers. The NetFront Living Connect middleware suite supports Linux, and complies with DLNA v1.5 specs, Access said. (more…)

Meet the robot boy with two brains

“Zeno,” a robotic boy with two brains, will visit a pair of robotics conferences this month. The 17-inch, 4.5-pound humanoid robot can speak, learn, interact with its surroundings, and even recognize faces, according to creator Hanson Robotics. (more…)

Fingerprint reader SDK targets Linux devices

Free embedded browser rev’s up, goes FLTK2

The Dillo project has achieved an alpha release of a next-generation version of its ultra-lightweight CGI forms-capable HTML browser for embedded systems. Dillo-f15f is built against FLTK2 (fast light toolkit, aka “full tick”) rather than GTK, and adds support for anti-aliased international UTF-8 text, among other new features. (more…)

Israel-based Emblaze Mobile has announced a mysterious new mobile communications device, expected to ship in 2008.
