Embedded Linux vendor attains support certification

Wind River today announced that after a rigorous, two-day, on-site audit, its customer service team in North America has attained a prestigious support center certification for the second year. The company claims to be the only embedded Linux provider certified under the Service Strategies “Support Center Practices” (SCP) program. (more…)

JTAG emulator supports native Linux on DaVinci DM355

Signum Systems has started shipping a JTAG emulator tailored for use with TI's recently launched sub-$10 DaVinci SoC (system-on-chip). Linux to grow 278% in embedded apps?

Linux use in future embedded projects will grow 278 percent over that in past projects, among commercial embedded OS users, suggests a recent study from Venture Development Corp. (VDC). Meanwhile, proprietary commercial embedded OS use is holding steady, gaining customers from do-it-yourself OS users, but losing as many to Linux, the analyst firm reports. (more…)

Palm tables Linux-based Foleo

Palm has canceled the Linux-based Foleo mobile companion, CEO Ed Colligan announced today on the company's blog. Colligan said the move would cost the company $10 million in earnings, but allow it to focus on a single Linux smartphone development platform going forward. (more…)

Sub-$10 processor does HD video, runs Linux

[Updated Sep. 18] — Texas Instruments (TI) is sampling an ultra low-cost, ARM9-based embedded processor with an integrated high-definition (HD) video encoder. The chipmaker launched its sub-$10 TMS320DM355 SoC (system-on-chip), together with a development board running MontaVista Linux, at the IBC video broadcaster's convention in London this week. Mot’s Linux phone arrives at U.S. stores

Motorola today sent out a mass email inviting recipients to “experience” its Linux-based RAZR2 V8 phone “at your nearest mobile phone store.” The phone will be offered by all major U.S. GSM/GPRS providers, including AT&T (formerly Cingular), Sprint, and T-Mobile, according to reports.

Embedded flash module targets consumer devices

SanDisk has expanded its solid-state drive (SSD) product line with a module a quarter the size of 1.8-inch hard drives. The flash-based uSSD 5000 is designed to be embedded on the motherboards of low-cost PCs, such as Intel's Classmate, or other consumer devices. (more…)

Telematics processor ecosystem includes Linux

Adobe adds H.264 to Flash Player 9

Can CVS save the landline phone?

A third of U.S. households will migrate to mobile-only phone services by 2011, resulting in an annual loss of $13 billion in fixed-line voice revenues to wireless substitutions, In-Stat forecasts. However, technologies are available to create next-generation “converged voice services” (CVS) that can breathe new life into fixed-line networks, the market research firm suggests. (more…)

Wind River acquires device software service provider

The largest company involved in the market for embedded Linux operating systems, tools, and professional services has acquired a Romanian device software services provider for $1.4 million. Wind River said Comsys employs 52, and has domain expertise telecom, mobile, and aerospace and defense. (more…)

Linux telephony stack demo’d in China

TapRoot Systems is demonstrating its telephony middleware for Linux/Qtopia-based mobile phones at the Linux Mobile Communications Conference this week in Beijing. The company says its TapRoot telephony middleware provides a “comprehensive” set of APIs (application programming interfaces) for communication with 2G-3G networks. (more…)
