Hackers adopt Linux-based IAD

France's second-largest telecom service provider has released source code for a popular residential gateway device based on Linux. Several hacker communities have since sprung up around Neuf Cegetel's Neuf Box 4, an “integrated access device” (IAD) with Internet, phone, and streaming video capabilities. (more…)

Linux exams featured at Intel devcon

Intel Developer Forum attendees can take Linux certification exams for half the usual price, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) has announced. The LPI will administer its two most basic and general-purpose exams for $75 apiece to pre-registered candidates at the event, set for Sept. 18-20 in San Francisco. (more…)

Linux the fastest-growing smartphone OS

Linux will power about 31 percent of all smartphones sold in 2012, and by then will have shipped in 331 million devices, says ABI. The research firm forecasts 75 percent CAGR (compound annual growth rate) for Linux in smartphones through 2012, making it the fastest-growing OS in the sector. (more…)

IP camera design runs MIPS Linux

ASIC vendor Micronas has introduced a hardware/software development kit for a small camera claimed capable of streaming D1 (DVD) resolution video over IP (Internet protocol) networks. The “Mini-IP Camera” kit is based on Micronas's Cypher ESN7108A SoC (system-on-chip), and runs Linux on the SoC's MIPS core. (more…)
