Configurable, extensible processor cores run Linux

[Updated Nov. 3, 2008] — Tensilica is shipping two new processor core families based on its “post-RISC” style Xtensa architecture. The LX2 and Xtensa 7 cores are available with MontaVista Linux, and come with tools aimed at helping designers configure interfaces, memory subsystems, and other components, and even extend the architecture with C/C++ application-specific instructions. Eclipse-based Linux dev tools rev up, go plugin

Wind River on Dec. 15 will ship a new version of its Eclipse-based development toolsuite that will, for the first time, be available as a set of plugins, greatly increasing deployment flexibility. Flash memory support for embedded devices revs up

Datalight has updated its resident flash memory manager and block device driver that works with Linux 2.6. FlashFX Pro version 3.10 adds support for more than 20 new flash chips from Samsung, AMD, and Intel, as well as Spansion's MirrorBit ORNAND, according to the company. (more…)

Linux/Qtopia tapped for W-CDMA handset design

NEC will use Trolltech's recently announced Greensuite phone stack in a new 3G W-CDMA handset reference design. The “Medity” design is part of NEC's PlatformOvia family of hardware/software reference designs for handsets, digital audio-visual equipment, and automotive infotainment systems, many of which use Linux along with Trolltech's Qtopia middleware, according to the companies. Open-source SDKs create collaborative messaging apps

Coversant has released a suite of open-source software development kits (SDKs) for building collaborative applications based on the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). The LGPL-licensed SDKs, known as SoapBox Studio, support Novell's Mono project, and version 2 of the .NET Framework and .NET Compact Framework (CF) managed application environments. (more…)

Ampro has upped the performance of its EPIC form-factor SBC (single-board computer) line, with a model based on a 1.8 GHz Pentium M 745.
