Fans of Linux, spirits, and sports can soon satisfy all their desires at once, with the arrival of HumWare's Linux-based, digital-signage kiosks in major U.S. sports bars and restaurants. Coupled with 32-inch LG touchscreens, the devices will deliver targeted ads, sports trivia games, and memorabilia sales.

The Digital Asociate kiosk is currently in the final stages of “expectancy testing,” according to the Colorado-based company. Once ready, it will be deployed as part of HumWare's “Boondoggle Sports Network,” which delivers ads, entertainment, and commerce over encrypted Internet tunnels. Initial network subscribers reportedly include Champps Americana, Fox and Hound, Hooters, Humperdinks, Jillians, Britannia Arms, Legends & Heroes, and Rawlings All-American Grille.

The Digital Associate comprises a small set-top box (pictured at right) that will be attached the back of 32-inch LCD panels, dubbed “Media Windows.” The kiosk was developed by Audio Video Interactive, which HumWare acquired in August. Lots more details about the device can be found in our earlier coverage, here.

Fast-food specialist McDonald's also recently pilot-tested Linux-based digital signage.
