Low-cost all-in-one remote access server runs Linux

Opengear is shipping an inexpensive, Linux-powered, remote access server aimed at providing secure access to “the entire IT infrastructure” at small satellite offices. The CM4001 costs about $300, and comes with an open source Java wizard created by Opengear to simplify secure authentication and tunnel creation. (more…)

AMCC readies low-cost, Linux-capable industrial SoC

AMCC will sample a low-power, high-performance SoC (system-on-chip) targeting networked industrial computing applications, in Q4 of this year. The 100-400MHz PPC405EZ will support complete operating systems “such as Linux,” AMCC says, and will feature 64-bit buses, onboard SRAM, a highly configurable timer, analog I/O, and versatile networking options. Reference platform weds Monahans to Linux

One month after Intel began sampling its newest XScale processor family, codenamed Monahans, InHand Electronics has debuted a board-level reference platform for the family. The Advanced Technology Platform (ATP) comes with Linux BSP (board support package), and incorporates a Monahans XScale processor running at “over 800 MHz,” according to the company. (more…)

Geode-based PC/104-Plus CPU module supports Linux

VersaLogic Corp. is shipping a PC/104-Plus form-factor CPU module based on an x86-compatible AMD Geode GX500 processor. The “Puma” board is compatible with “most x86 operating systems,” including Linux, Windows CE/XPe, QNX, and VxWorks, VersaLogic said. (more…)

Open-source embedded projects garner fiscal relief

The BusyBox and uClibc projects have joined a conservancy started by the Software Free Law Center (SFLC) to provide free software projects with “fiscal and administrative services.” The SFLC says its Software Freedom Conservancy will shoulder distracting burdens on behalf of free software developers, allowing them to focus on development. Telecom software vendor Enea will resell MontaVista's embedded Linux distributions as part of an integrated software stack aimed at network and telcom equipment providers. “NASP” (network application services platform) pits Enea and partner MontaVista against rival Wind River, in the growth market for heterogeneous distributed systems combining Linux with RTOSes (real-time operating systems). Sun aims “standard” Java at embedded apps

Sun has announced the first two versions of its “Standard Edition” Java development environment aimed specifically at embedded devices, especially those running Linux. Networked home electronics market set to take off

The market for home networking and connected entertainment devices will grow from $14 billion in 2005 to more than $85 billion in 2011, ABI forecasts. This “astonishing” growth rate will be driven by a desire for “pervasive connectivity” in applications such as multi-room PVRs, place-shifting, and networked gaming, according to the market research firm. TI chip merges Bluetooth and FM radio

Texas Instruments (TI) has crammed a Bluetooth wireless transceiver plus an FM stereo receiver into a system-on-chip (SoC) that can stream FM radio programming directly from a handheld device to a Bluetooth-enabled headset. Palm Linux phone rumor redux

Rumors that Palm Inc., may be developing a Linux-based mobile phone have resurfaced, fueled by a Palm job listing for a “Linux Engineer — Mobile Handset, Embedded Systems,” responsible for the “design and development of components of a new software platform.” (more…)
