Embedded Linux powers Taiwanese video instruction system

Schools in Taiwan will soon use embedded Linux based systems to provide continuing education courses to teachers through inexpensive video-on-demand (VoD) devices. Additionally, by Q3 2004, some 100,000 educational VoD units are expected to roll out for use by Taiwanese students. (more…)

New Red Hat technical journal comes with code

Red Hat will launch a bi-monthly technical magazine in March called Wide Open. Each issue will feature three CDs of software such as new Fedora project releases. Yearly, six-issue subscriptions cost $59.70, with an introductory price of $35.95. Wide Open adds to the Red Hat Magazine Red Hat has published in Europe for some time. (more…)

Linux application analyzer adds Itanium support, open drivers, more

Intel has released a new version of its VTune Performance Analyzer for Linux, featuring fully Linux-native support for Itanium processors, a command-line interface, open source drivers that support custom kernels, and more. Intel says the tool targets mainly the optimization of financial, engineering, scientific, and multimedia applications. (more…)

Rendering technology optimizes viewing of Web content on mid-size displays

Opera Software has announced “Medium-Screen Rendering” (MSR) technology similar to its Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology for rendering Web content on small displays. OSDL forms Desktop Linux Working Group, notes surge in interest

LinuxDevices.com's sister site DesktopLinux.com reports that the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) has formed a Desktop Linux Working Group, which will work to recommend improvements to Linux that will increase its use as a desktop operating system. “EDGE” reference design supports Linux-based mobile device apps

Texas Instruments (TI) has released the first of several planned mobile phone reference design chipsets supporting the “Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution” (EDGE) high-speed mobile data standard. VME/PCI-X bridge septuples throughput

Motorola Computer Group has announced a single board computer (SBC) with a VMEbus interface more than seven times faster than typical. The $3,995 (estimated) MVME6100 is expected to ship in May of 2004, with Linux and VxWorks board support packages. (more…)
