Hypervisor supports Atom, 64-bit guest OSes

LynuxWorks announced a new version of its Linux-compatible separation kernel and hypervisor. LynxSecure 5.0 now offers increased performance, support for 64-bit and symmetric multi-processing (SMP) guest OS virtualization, plus compatibility with Intel's Atom E6xx processors and “second generation” Core CPUs, the company says.

Asus netbooks are AMD-powered, offer HD video

Asus has revealed two netbooks equipped with AMD “Fusion” processors and HD-capable Radeon graphics. The Eee PC 1015B comes with a 10.1-inch screen and either the dual-core C-50 or single-core C-30, while the Eee PC 1215B has a 12.1-inch screen, dual-core C-50 or E-350 processors, plus optional USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0.

Android tablets to lead iPad by 2014, says study

Despite the iPad's huge lead, an RBC study projects that 40 percent of the 185 million units expected to ship in 2014 will run Android, followed by the iPad with 34 percent. Meanwhile, however, the iPad 2 unveiling was sufficiently impressive to impel a Samsung VP to say his company was rethinking certain “inadequate” features of its Android 3.0-based Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

Kontron fields bevy of Sandy Bridge boards

Kontron announced a quartet of boards featuring Intel's “second generation” Core processors. They include the KTQM67M/mITX Mini-ITX board, the KT67/FLEX FlexATX board, the CP6003-SA CompactPCI board, and the VX3035 VPX board, according to the company.

Review: Motorola Xoom tablet excels at multitasking

Even in the reflected light of the impressive new dual-core, dual-camera iPad 2, the Android 3.0-driven Motorola Xoom tablet holds its own, says this eWEEK review. Although the price is steep and optimized apps are hard to come by, the Xoom's zippy multitasking, a slick Honeycomb interface, well-crafted cameras, long battery life, and an impending 4G upgrade help make the tablet a winner.

Wind River frees up embedded Linux kit program

Wind River is expanding its On-Board Program, which provides board vendors with the Linux and VxWorks software tools, documentation, and training they need to develop, test, and validate Embedded Development Kits. The more-diversified program now lets vendors bring Wind River Test Management-based BSP validation in-house, among other benefits, says the Intel subsidiary.

Thin Mini-ITX boards will cut device costs, Intel says

All-in-one PCs, ATMs, gaming machines, and other embedded devices could be set for a price cut, thanks to a new motherboard format being promoted by Intel. “Thin Mini-ITX” boards, set for broad availability in mid-2011, will bring standardization to products that previously required custom solutions, the chipmaker says.

46-inch signage computer keeps out dust, water

Axiomtek announced an HD-ready digital signage computer that includes a 46-inch touchscreen with a 4000:1 contrast ratio and IP3X/IP65 protection against dust and water. The DSH-146 features a removable board with a choice of Intel Celeron or Core 2 Duo processors, an optional motion detection sensor and infrared touchscreen, Mini PCI Express expansion, and up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the company says.

Ubuntu-ready Cortex-A8 nettop and netbook drop prices

Genesi announced price reductions and a new Ubuntu 10.10 update for its small-format, fanless line of Wi-Fi-enabled Efika MX computers, which run on Freescale's 800MHz Cortex-A8 i.MX515 system-on-chips. Aimed at emerging markets, the five-Watt Efika MX Smarttop nettop now costs $129, while the 10.1-inch, 12-Watt Efika MX Smartbook netbook is available for $199, or $249 with a 3G option.

Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded align embedded Linux efforts

The Linux Foundation announced that its Intel-backed Yocto Project, which develops open source tools for Linux-based embedded systems, will align and merge technology with the OpenEmbedded community known for its Linux build system. The Linux advocacy organization also announced new partners in the Yocto Project, including major embedded Linux semiconductor manufacturers and software development firms.

Module sports auto-oriented Cortex-A8 processor

iWave Systems announced a COM (computer on module) based on Freescale's i.MX53 SoC (system on chip). The Linux- and Android-ready iW-Rainbow-G11M includes not only the 1GHz, ARM Cortex-A8 processor, but also 1GB of DDR2 RAM and 16MB of flash storage, according to the company.

Android Market being targeted by malware

Google will soon pull dozens of “DroidDream Trojan” malware apps from its Android Market, which is now getting hit by malware that has previously targeted third-party app stores. Also this week, a compromised version of the “Steamy Windows” Android app has shown up on a Chinese third-party app hosting site.

Congatec announced a COM Express module that includes Intel's Atom E6xx processors and support for a -40 to 185 deg. F operating range. The Conga-CA6 includes up to 2GB of soldered-on memory, an optional solid state disk up to 32GB, and support for dual displays, according to the company.

Saab demos in-car Android infotainment system with open API

Saab Automobile unveiled an Android-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) concept supported by an open API and app store. The “Saab IQon” system is equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen, provides streaming multimedia, navigation, and on-board storage, and offers API access to more than 500 sensor signals that can be remotely relayed back to Saab dealerships.
