Embedded Linux file system rev’d for performance

Datalight released a new version of its Reliance Nitro file system aimed at embedded Linux devices. Reliance Nitro SDK for Linux 2.0 offers improved read and write performance, fast boot times, solid reliability, and a wide assortment of validation and testing tools, says the company.

Thunderbolt weaves PCI Express and DisplayPort onto single cable

As expected, Apple and Intel have announced “Thunderbolt,” a rebranded version of the latter's “Light Peak” technology. Initially available on three MacBook Pro notebooks, it offers 10Gb/sec. data transfer, the ability to daisy-chain six peripherals, plus both PCI Express and DisplayPort support, according to the companies.

NTT DoCoMo’s Android phone is just a third of an inch thick

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo says it will start selling an Android 2.2 phone that's claimed to be the world's thinnest, at just a third of an inch. The NEC Medias N-04C phone will be joined on the network by Sony-Ericsson's Android 2.3-based Xperia Arc SO-01C phone and LG's Optimus Pad L-06C tablet, the latter running Android 3.0 on an Nvidia Tegra 2.

Android Trojan found in alternative app markets

A new Android Trojan is being repackaged in popular Android apps and distributed through app markets and forums serving Chinese-speaking users. Mobile security firms NetQin and Lookout Mobile Security have both issued alerts regarding the “BD.HongTouTou” Trojan, which has been found in repackaged titles like “RoboDefense.”

Android 3.0 SDK released as Xoom starts countdown

Google released the final Android 3.0 (“Honeycomb”) SDK to developers, offering a number of enhancements compared to last month's preliminary build, including UI Builder improvements in the ADT Plugin. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless and Motorola will launch the first Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola Xoom, on Feb. 24, and Adobe says the Xoom will receive a Flash Player 10.2 update in late March.

Reports: Intel’s Light Peak I/O will debut on Apple laptops

Intel is apparently about to launch its “Light Peak” interconnect, offering 10Gb/sec. data transfer and the ability to connect multiple peripherals to a single cable. The technology will be announced tomorrow on MacBook Pro notebooks from Apple, where it will be branded “Thunderbolt,” according to multiple reports.

First Tegra 2-based Qseven module spins HD video on 5 Watts

MSC Vertriebs announced an ARM-based Qseven module that appears to be the industry's first such device using Cortex-A9 cores. The MSC Q7-NT2 is built around a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 290 processor, supports 1080p video, offers interfaces ranging from gigabit Ethernet to I2C, consumes only five Watts, and offers extended temperature support, says the company.

OSADL preps for real-time Linux conference, launches book series

[Updated: Feb. 24] — OSADL (Open Source Automation Development Lab) is calling for papers for its 13th RealTime Linux Workshop (RTLWS13) in Prague on Oct. 20-22. Also announced were an “OSADL Academic Works” book series — starting with Roland Kammerer's “Linux in Safety-Critical Applications” — and two new academic partners, ZHAW's InES lab in Winterthur, Switzerland, and the RealTime Systems Laboratory (RETIS) in Pisa, Italy.

Car computer runs Ubuntu 10.10, offers GPS and HSDPA

Vic has begun selling an Ubuntu Linux-based, double-DIN car computer with GPS and 3G HSDPA for approximately $410. Based on an Intel Celeron M processor with 2GB of DDR2 memory, the NaviSurfer II Ubu-3G offers a 250GB hard disk drive, a seven-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen, and extensive connectivity including multiple camera inputs, says the company.

Rugged alternative for SO-DIMMs makes its debut

The Small Form Factor Special Interest Group (SFF-SIG) has comes up with a ruggedized alternative to SO-DIMM that offers more flexibility in memory sizes compared to memory soldered to a CPU board. The RS-DIMM Rugged Memory Specification, supported by two upcoming Swissbit and Virtium Technology modules, defines a rugged, DDR3 mezzanine memory module with a pin-and-socket connector optimized for small CPU boards.

Ibase announced a fanless barebone computer equipped with a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-620M CPU. The AMI200-953 comes with 4GB DDR3 memory, a 40GB hard disk, dual Ethernet ports, eight USB ports, a serial port, plus DVI-I, DVI-D, and VGA ports with dual display capability, says the company.

RSA Conference recap: securing cloud computing and prepping for cyber-war

Full-duplex transmission could double speed of wireless networks

Stanford University researchers have announced a breakthrough that could nearly double the throughput of wireless networks. The “antenna cancellation” technology has already been demonstrated in office settings and, once perfected, will add little cost to Wi-Fi equipment, according to the university.
