Coming soon to a download near you: Linux kernel “pre-2.6”

CNET reports that a beta version of Linux 2.6 could be out as early as next week. “I'm planning on starting the so-called 'pre-2.6' series in early July, and that is kind of a beta series,” Linus Torvalds reportedly said in an interview. The first full kernel 2.6 release, version 2.6.0, will probably occur a few months later, Torvalds told CNET. The release of Linux kernel 2.6.0 had been projected for around June, 2003, but has slipped several months, the story said.

The Linux development community uses odd numbers (e.g. “2.5.x”) to designate “development” kernel releases, and even numbers (e.g. “2.6.x”) for “stable” kernel releases.
