Integrated Device Technology (IDT) announced the availability of a royalty-free embedded Linux OS and toolkit for its Interprise family of integrated communications processors. The processors are intended for applications such as enterprise and residential gateways, desktop/workgroup switches, and wireless access points.

The new embedded Linux support is said to include a Linux 2.4.18 kernel, optimized device drivers for on-chip peripherals and interfaces, and a suite of GNU-based development tools.

“The Linux operating system is an attractive solution for designers looking to reduce both their development and overall system costs,” said Sandra Chang, strategic partner program manager for the IDT Internetworking Products Division. “IDT is committed to supporting Linux as it continues to gain momentum in the embedded market. In addition to providing our own Linux-based offering, we will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure the availability of multiple Linux solutions for our integrated processors.”

Additionally, IDT will continue its third-party relationships with Jungo and MontaVista Software, who also provide embedded Linux operating systems, tools, and support for the IDT procesors. “The new [IDT-provided] Linux software package is compatible with [the Jungo and MontaVista] offerings, making it convenient for designers to move seamlessly to a third-party design environment,” the company said.
