Coms processor gains commercial embedded Linux support

TimeSys has added support for another Freescale communications processor to its suite of low-cost embedded Linux developer services. The company's subscription-based LinuxLink service is now available to customers of Freescale's MPC8548E PowerQUICC III communications processor family, the company says.

The MPC8548E targets Ethernet-only communications processing applications, such as enterprise networking, telecom transmission and switching, and 3G wireless basestations. It is built using 90nm process technology, and based on an e500 PowerPC core clockable to 1.5GHz.

The MPC8548E can be ordered in a variety of configurations variously supporting single- and dual-channel PCI, PCI-Express, and PCI-X interfaces. The chip also features four gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and an onboard security engine with acceleration for the Kasumi algorithm used in 2.5G and 3G wireless network infrastructure.

Freescale launched the MPC8548E in September, 2004, along with three other PowerQUICC III processor lines.

TimeSys's LinuxLink service has supported other Freescale MPC85xx chips since its its launch in August of last year. TimeSys has also marketed Carrier Grade Linux distributions in the past.
