Developing software for a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 Linux PDA
May 5, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsBruce Forsberg set out to find an MP3 player that could both work with Linux, and be capable of playing “Old Time Radio” (OTR) shows — CD-Rs loaded with radio broadcasts from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s in MP3 format. OTR shows are typically encoded at 24, 32, or 48 kbps in mono format, with a sample rate of 22050 and are 1/2 hour to 1 hour in length, and not all MP3 players work well under these conditions.
After some searching, Forsberg reached the conclusion that a Linux PDA would be his best bet, enabling him to write his own custom software to perform the required functions. He hopes the resulting technical article about how he accomplished his mission will serve as an inspiration to others to start programming for the Sharp Zaurus PDAs.
