DiskOnChip support announced for TASTE Embedded Linux

Nuremberg, Germany; Embedded Systems 2001 — M-Systems and Tuxia announced DiskOnChip support for Tuxia's TASTE Embedded Linux OS. The new support will enable diskless operation of Internet appliances such as personal access devices, TV set-top boxes, screen phones, information terminals, and thin client computers. According to research firm IDC, the market for these types of devices is expected to reach 90 million users by 2004 in the US and Europe alone.

TASTE (Tuxia Appliance Synthesis Technology Enabled) is a new Linux-based embedded operating system for Internet appliances. It features a high level of software compression and provides the choice of an embedded Mozilla or Netscape-based browser along with specialized middleware and development and configuration tools.

The entire TASTE system can be stored within an M-Systems DiskOnChip flash disk, allowing the Internet appliances running TASTE to operate without conventional spinning media such as a hard disk. DiskOnChip provides the reliability of solid-state persistent storage, allowing operators to modify specific parts of the TASTE-based system on the flash disk via online updates, without jeopardizing individual settings stored elsewhere on the chip.
