The Firebird Project announced that the newest release of its lightweight, open-source SQL database has been added to Debian “experimental,” OpenSUSE 11 RC1, and Ubuntu's forthcoming “Intrepid Ibex” distributions. Having evolved from Borland Interbase, Firebird is a fairly small SQL RDBMS suitable for embedding within applications.

Available for Linux, Unix, and Windows, Firebird comprises a database engine, ODBC driver, “Jaybird” native class 4 JCA-JDBC driver, .NET data provider, and extensive documentation and testing materials. A related “FlameRobin” project aims to provide a graphical interface assembled from open source components.

Last month the Firebird Project announced Firebird 2.1 RC2, which adds ARM support in addition to its previous support for MIPS, PowerPC, and other architectures. The release also added database triggers, temporary and monitoring tables, common table expressions, and recursive queries.

Availability

Firebird 2.1 RC2 is now available for free download, here, says the Firebird Project. Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.1) is due to ship on October 30th.
