Embedded Linux companies make 2006 SD Times 100
Jun 1, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsSeveral companies and organizations involved with embedded Linux have been named to the SD Times's annual list of software industry market leaders and influencers. Enea came out atop the “Embedded and Mobile” category, where Wind River also received a mention. Other picks include Eclipse.org, Apache.org, and the Free Software Foundation.
In selecting Enea as tops in the Embedded and Mobile category, the SD Times wrote:
Johan Wall has called for unity among embedded tools makers. In a market where most still build proprietary devices, Wall has shown himself to have chutzpah. And with Enea's ubiquitous embedded database, it's a sure bet that the rest of the world will have to listen up and take notice of Wall's call.
Other mentions in the Embedded and Mobile category included Sun, which was lauded for the “dominant” position of J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), and Wind River, for its “device specific optimization” efforts that mean “less chip design” and “more software streamlining.”
In the category of “Influencers,” Microsoft received top billing, while other mentions included the Apache and Eclipse foundations, and the Free Software Foundation (FSF). Of the FSF's plans to revise the GPL, the SD Times wrote, “For years, the GPL lay dormant yet virulent. Proposed revisions to the free-as-in-speech license may turn virus into patent carnivore.”
