Embedded Linux OS, tools available as trial download
Mar 8, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsWind River is offering a 30-day evaluation version of its General Purpose Platform (GPP), Linux Edition. The trial includes an embedded Linux 2.6.10 kernel and filesystem, configuration utilities, and the company's Eclipse-based Workbench development toolsuite. It can be downloaded or ordered on CD, for free with registration.
GPP primarily targets consumer electronics and industrial embedded products with a “medium” footprint. It currently supports x86 and ARM, with MIPS support planned for mid-year.
Wind River's other Linux OS products, besides GPP, include:
- Platform for Network Equipment (PNE) — Adds clustering, high-availability, and other features for large-footprint embedded devices
- Platform for Consumer Electronics (PCE) — Subtracts bulk, while adding power-saving technologies and other features for mobile and small-footprint devices
The trial download takes about an hour on a fast broadband connection — it weighs in at nearly 700MB, and requires 10GB of free disk space to install. It is intended to be run on Pentium 4 workstations running RHEL 3 (update 5) or 4 (Red Hat enterprise Linux), with GNOME or KDE.
Additional details can be found on the download registration page.
Wind River announced GPP in May of last year, shipping it in June.
Wind River competitor TimeSys also offers an evaluation download that supports x86.
