Embedded Linux powers intelligent online video camera

Axis Communications has introduced a new model of its intelligent Network Camera, the Model 2120. With its built-in 100 MHz RISC microprocessor running an embedded Linux operating system, and its Ethernet connection, the device can serve as an intelligent tool for remote monitoring of live video via either an intranet or the Internet. Typical applications include facility monitoring and surveillance or bringing live remote images to a company's web site. When triggered, the camera's built-in intelligent motion detection feature can alert a specified recipient via email, or can transmit images of specifically designated areas of its environment.


The camera within the Model 2120 is based on a high-quality Sony CCD that produces state-of-the-art image quality and is capable of delivering up to 30 frames per second (“full motion video”) across 10/100 Megabit networks. The camera is encased in sturdy metal. For outdoor use, an outdoor enclosure can be purchased from Axis partners.

  • Built-in web server (Boa) and web interface; no PC needed for operation
  • Up to 30 (NTSC) or 25 (PAL) frames/sec
  • Powerful video motion detection with multiple sensitivity windows
  • Quick and easy installation — connect to an Ethernet network or use the included null-modem cable for modem installation
  • Accepts dial-in and dial-out via external modem
  • Event triggered remote image storage via email and FTP
  • High speed hardware based image compression generating high quality JPEG images
  • Secure — can be password/username protected or open to the entire world
  • Configurable maximum bandwidth limitation to prevent network saturation
  • 30 (25) frames/sec typically requires about 1.5 Mbit/sec
  • Contains Flash memory for simple upgrades and storage or user designed html files

  • Based on the Axis ETRAX 100, 32-bit RISC, 100 MIPS system-on-chip processor
  • 16 Mbytes RAM (up to 8 Mbytes available for pre/post alarm image storage)

  • ARTPEC-1 compression chip
  • Embedded Linux operating system
