Commercial Linux OS and tools vendors are being challenged by increasingly sophisticated competition from purely open-source software alternatives, according to Venture Development Corp. (VDC). A new report from VDC examines this and other challenges faced by companies such as MontaVista, Wind River, TimeSys, Sysgo, and many others.

VDC says only three percent of survey respondents report using commercial Linux in their embedded projects, compared with 12 percent who report using “public” Linux. On the upside, the research firm expects commercial Linux adoption to reach five percent in the near future, while non-commercial Linux will gain 20 percent of the total embedded market, the research firm predicts.
