Embedded NetBSD proponent secures $2 million funding
Feb 5, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsNY, NY — (press release excerpt) — embedded NetBSD specialist Wasabi Systems announced today that it secured $2.0 million in a Series A round of financing, with additional funds anticipated from a combination of corporate and venture capital investors over the next sixty days. The financing is being led by Newlight Associates, a New York-based venture fund, which has committed $1.5 million to the round.
Wasabi Systems provides custom products and development services for the NetBSD operating system. NetBSD's ability to run on dozens of hardware platforms with low overhead makes it ideal for next-generation embedded systems — the computers hidden in everyday devices such as cell phones, telecom switches and cable set-top boxes.
The Series A round is the latest in a series of significant events for Wasabi. In recent weeks, Wasabi hired John Smithmyer, formerly Global Sales Manager of BSD Products at Wind River Systems, to head its sales team and also completed a port to Intel's low-power-consumption XScale Microarchitecture.
“The embedded systems space is taking off as computing and the Internet infiltrate more aspects of daily life,” said Bob Raucci, General Partner of Newlight. “NetBSD's technological advantage and Wasabi's talent and momentum represent a tremendous opportunity in this rapidly growing market.”
“With additional resources, we'll be able to show even more people why NetBSD is the best choice for their embedded applications,” said Perry E. Metzger, CEO of Wasabi. “We have the best available OS for connected embedded devices, and the opportunity to turn technical superiority into market share is very exciting to us.”
