Embedded VM adds Java 5, supports Linux

Aonix has released a new version of its real-time virtual machine (VM) and toolset for embedded applications. PERC Ultra, the successor to PERC 4.2, adds Java 5 capabilities and enhanced performance, along with new ports to embedded OSes such as Linux. It now supports Linux on x86, PowerPC, and ARM.

Performance enhancements in PERC Ultra include optimized reclamation of large objects, a 12 percent footprint reduction (due to the optimization of C stack space), and a seven percent reduction in memory requirements for zip and jar files, according to Aonix. Tool enhancements include integration with the Eclipse TPTP profiling capabilities, shell enhancements, easier installation, and improved help.

Aonix says the new rev of PERC provides full Java 5 language features, such as generics, annotations, and type-safe enumerations. It also includes enhancements of key packages from the Java Platform Standard Edition library set, and new libraries such as java.util.concurrent and java.nio.channels.

The latest PERC version supports Linux on x86, PowerPC, and ARM, as well as XScale processors in big endian mode. The Ultra release also adds suport for Windows CE on XScale, VxWorks 6.x on PowerPC and x86, and support for the latest safety-critical version of LynxOS, according to the company.

PERC Ultra will be available in May, Aonix said.
