EMF redux — Linux or Windows, that’s the question
Sep 2, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsUpdated Sep. 3, 2003 — SD Times provides further perspective — and debate — about the recently released market research report from Embedded Market Forecasters (EMF) which concluded that projects based on Windows Embedded operating systems are completed 3-4 times faster than Linux-based projects. Opinions critical and supportive of the EMF study are cited.
Specific study criticisms include:
- funded by Microsoft
- XP run-time fees not considered
- small sample sizes
- project selection criteria were different on the two platforms
- Linux-related data may have been older
- analysis fails to differentiate between projects of differing size and complexity (some embedded system development projects on Linux — carrier-class projects for instance — are extremely complex)
On the other side of the debate, similar though less dramatic survey analysis from Venture Data Corp. is noted.
