Ericsson mobile group joins open source embedded graphics API effort

“We firmly believe that OpenGL ES will become an important graphics API in the embedded arena,” said Bjorn Ekelund, Vice President Technology Development, Ericsson Mobile Platforms.
The OpenGL Embedded Subset (OpenGL ES) is described as a light-weight, royalty-free embedded graphics standard that provides graphics API profiles for a broad range of embedded systems and devices, including handheld wireless devices, automotive and avionics displays, and multimedia consumer devices such as advanced digital TVs, set-top boxes, and game consoles.
“Joining the Khronos Group is well in line with our commitment to delivering rich and powerful multimedia functionalities in our mobile platform solutions, and will enable our customers to develop mobile phones and devices with attractive multimedia and gaming applications with appealing user interfaces,” Ekelund added.
The Khronos Group says its purpose is to create royalty-free, cross-platform, open standards for graphics APIs with advanced 2D and scalable 3D capabilities that enable authoring and playback of dynamic media on a wide variety of platforms and devices. Current Khronos projects include OpenGL ES and OpenML.
