Familiar Linux project releases vers. 0.6, Opie 1.0 coming soon

An announcement from the handhelds.org project . . .

handhelds.org has today released version 0.6 of the Familiar Linux distribution for Linux-based operation of Compaq/HP iPAQ devices. New features include the resource-savvy BusyBox Linux tools collection, as well as a 2.4.18 Linux kernel including patches… for preemptive multitasking, Lots of bug fixes and images which include the OPIE or GPE user interfaes are included.

Everyone can grab the image for free from the Familiar website.

Current work is ongoing regarding porting the distribution to the XScale CPUs and the HP Jornada 56x devices.

In the meantime, the Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (OPIE) heads towards its first stable 1.0 release, which we expect releasing in December. A completely new PIM framework with exciting additions, various enhancements, and database support are among many other features. OPIE is designed to be the most sophisticated and universal graphical environment for embedded Linux devices.
