Free Software Foundation and FSMLabs resolve GPL dispute

Sep 17, 2001 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

[Updated 3:30pm PDT] According to Eben Moglen, general counsel of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), “the FSF and FSMLabs have reached an agreement in principal on a fully GPL compatible license for RTLinux.” The revised license is expected to be published by FSMLabs within the next one to two days.

When contacted by LinuxDevices.com for confirmation, FSMLabs president Victor Yodaiken said, “were happy to have this settled and go back to our business. There seems to have been some miscommunication, and it's good to see that we can get past it.”

“There will be some minor changes to the license. They are changes that we had basically agreed to last year, which somehow got lost in the shuffle,” added Yodaiken.

At least a portion of the “minor change” apparently involves eliminating the requirement for users of RTLinux in a GPL manner to provide FSMLabs with records regarding the use of the GPL software on demand, in accordance with section 2.6 of the Open RTLinux Patent License.

“Essentially, the notification stuff is not needed. We never really got anything out of it — it was essentially a paperwork overhead for us.”
