Gnome Linux to attack Windows
Aug 14, 2000 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsMary Jo Foley, of ZDNet News, asks “Can Linux make a run at Windows on the desktop?” Foley reports that a major announcement of multi-company backing for the Gnome Linux windowing interface will be made tomorrow at LinuxWorld expo in San Jose, CA. Foley writes . . .
“A high-profile group of companies are expected to back the Gnome Linux interface as a serious competitor to Windows on the desktop systems. But if history is a guide, even the support of companies including Sun, Compaq and IBM might not be enough to make a significant dent in the Windows world.”
“This week, according to a report published in The New York Times, a number of top computer hardware vendors are going to throw their weight behind Gnome as well. Among the companies slated to announce their support for Gnome at a Tuesday press conference at Linux Expo in San Jose, Calif., are Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc.”
