Google “Summer of Code” includes embedded Linux projects

Applications are due today for Google's “Summer of Code” 2006, a program in which selected student developers will earn stipends and receive mentoring in exchange for contributing to open source software projects. Mentors are available from 102 projects, including several related to embedded Linux.

The inaugural Summer of Code event took place last year, and connected more than 400 students in 49 countries with mentors from 40 open source projects, Google says. This year, 102 mentoring organizations were approved, and Google hopes to accept more students, as well, it says. Student applications opened on May 1, and close today.

Each mentoring organization publishes a list of suggested projects, while students submit applications that explain why they'd like to take on a particular project, and why they believe they are the best person to do so.
