Handheld Linux software index launches

Apr 28, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

A new index of Linux software for mobile devices has launched. The Handheld Linux Software Index was created for the community and is hosted by Handheld-Linux.com, an online store specializing in small, handheld Linux devices.

The Index was announced in the OpenEmbedded discussion forums by Handheld-Linux.com founder Nikolaus Schaller. Schaller says the new index was patterned after the popular but neglected Zaurus Software Index. However, the applications listings have been updated after “lots of work,” he says. Additionally, quite a few new features were added to make the index more useful and maintainable.

Schaller says the Handheld Linux Software Index began by importing Zaurus Software Index data, and then requesting authors to update the records. New features compared to the old Zaurus index include user logins, a comments system, update notification subscriptions, and improved screenshot management. Additionally, users can become moderators, and help with maintenance chores, Schaller says.

Schaller says he hopes handheld Linux users will use the database, bookmark it, and link to it, in order to help it get established. He also invites readers to submit updates, mark old entries, add comments about bugs, submit suggestions for further improvements, and request “moderator” status. Users can also support the project by patronizing the Handheld-Linux.com site, he notes.
