A project has been started to port the open source Helix DNA client to ARM processors under Linux with an initial objective of getting it working on the Sharp Zaurus 5500 and 5600 Linux PDAs.

The current work targets a working command line Helix DNA Client running on the Zaurus PDAs. The grander aim is to support Linux running on a broad spectrum of ARM-based devices, including PDAs, Smart Phones, Set-top Boxes, Home media gateways, etc.

“Helix is Real Networks' open source project,” explained project contributor Lorn Potter. “The Real Networks codecs are still proprietary, and are not open sourced, but should be available in binary form to be used. Everything else is open source.”

“Since Helix already runs on linux X11, it should be rather painless to port,” Potter added.

This project is said to be the first port of the Helix DNA client requested and performed by Helix Community members. The project's website is here.
