In-flight entertainment systems said to run embedded Linux
Sep 10, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsEngadget has published a seat-of-the-pants review of an in-flight entertainment system it says is based on embedded Linux. The review includes informal photos and a description of Matsushita Avionics Systems (MAS) eFX, an all-digital networked multimedia/data distribution system supporting satellite TV, mp3 playback, Internet access, and more.
The “review” is based on a flight taken on Song Airlines, which installs the MAS eFX systems in the backs of some of its airplane seats. The Song Airlines systems provide access to Dish Network TV, according to the review, along with locally streamed audio content, and an interactive trivia game.
The Engadget article lists other capabilities of the eFX systems not present in Song's installation, including high-resolution GPS tracking/mapping, in-seat Internet connectivity, passenger-created playlists from in-flight library, and connecting gate information displays.
The Engadget story ends with a number of informal photos of the Song Airlines systems. MAS did not immediately respond to attempts to confirm that the eFX is in fact based on embedded Linux.
