In-memory database targets smartphones, PDAs

FirstSQL has released an “Embedded Mobile” (EM) version of its FirstSQL/J Java database with support for Metrowerks Linux. FirstSQL's EM is a small-footprint, high performance in-memory ORDBMS (object-relational database management system) targeting advanced data-centric enterprise applications on J2ME-based mobile, wireless, and embedded devices.

FirstSQL claims EM delivers “all the original FirstSQL/J v2.65 core sophistication and functionality” in a 500KB footprint that can be deployed in as little as 400KB. More about FirstSQL/J is available here.

EM includes a cross-platform setup program for installation on a desktop/development machine. Several options are provided for installing a JVM, application, and an EM pre-loaded database. Several JVMs are bundled, with support coming soon for the Jeode Java VM from Esmertec.

“Our main focus is to simplify both enterprise mobile database application development and deployment,” said David Morse, vice president of marketing at FirstSQL, Inc.
