Open source server appliances ship
Mar 9, 2009 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views[Updated 6PM] — Israeli software appliance project TurnKey Linux announced a dozen new open-source server appliances based on Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS (Long-Term-Support). The releases include servers for LAMP, Ruby on Rails, Joomla, MediaWiki, Drupal, LAPP, Django, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, says the… group.

Additionally, the group says it is privately testing appliance builds for Apache Tomcat, WordPress, Moodle, Movable Type, and phpBB.
Launched six months ago, the TurnKey project offers secure, minimal-build open source server appliances for on-demand infrastructure, such as cloud deployment, says the group. Having released three servers in October, for LAMP stack, the Drupal CMS, and the Joomla CMS, TurnKey has now spun off servers for open-source applications including Ruby on Rails, MediaWiki (Wikipedia's Wiki engine), Django framework, MySQL/PostgreSQL database engines, and LAPP Appliances. In addition, TurnKey now offers the Drupal 6 content management system, in addition to Drupal 5.
Each TurnKey Linux appliance is packaged as a single “universal” image that can install a pre-integrated, turnkey server solution in “a couple of minutes,” says the organization. The servers have a typical footprint of 150MB, and are said to support installations on both real hardware and virtual machines, including VMWare, Xen, VirtualBox, or KVM.

The TurnKey Linux appliances are built on top of the auto-updating Turnkey Core appliance. Available as a separate download for developers, TurnKey Core has a footprint of 100MB. Touted features include SSL support and a “rich web” administration interface.
Stated TurnKey co-founder Liraz Siri, “The largest Linux distributions have over 23,000 packages. However, currently it can still take considerable skill and effort to cherry pick the right components and glue them together.”
Availability
The TurnKey Appliances are available now for free download. More information may be found here.
