Ed Scannell, at InfoWorld.com, interviews Michael Tiemann about his role as chief technical officer (CTO) of Red Hat, and regarding his thoughts on the new and growing trend of using open source software in development projects . . .

“Tiemann: My role is to basically provide both communication to users about what we are doing and what is happening in the open-source space. It is also taking information from users and from the marketplace and distilling it down so that our product and engineering teams can really understand what needs to be built”

“Tiemann: Some analysts are making assumptions about what Linux can't do, and this completely misses the point, which is that with open source technologies, anything can be done.”

“Tiemann: Many [companies' CTOs] have been using Linux at home for maybe two or three years. When they talk to their top engineers, their top engineers are saying, 'Wow, I am so glad you are finally asking the right questions.' . . .”
