Intel taps PalmPalm for XScale Embedded Linux

Feb 20, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Seoul, Korea — (press release excerpt) — PalmPalm Technology Inc. announced today that it will supply Tynux, its Embedded Linux operating system, to manufacturers using Intel's next generation processor for PDAs, XScale. Intel began its launch of the new XScale processors in Asia this week with an event held yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul, Korea.

The 400MHz XScale processor delivers up to twice the performance of Intel's StrongARM processor, which is used in many current-generation PDAs including iPAQ and Zaurus. Intel introduced two processors based on XScale this week, designated the PXA210 and PXA250. The PXA250, an advanced embedded processor running at 400MHz, targets next-generation high-performance PDAs that support video streaming, MP3 audio, wireless Internet access, and other leading edge functions. The PXA210 targets smart phones and lower-priced PDAs, and is expected to compete aggressively with Texas Instruments' recently announced OMAP.

Intel's XScale processors are being supported by four embedded operating systems for PDA applications: Embedded Linux, Windows CE, PalmOS, and EPOC. Intel has selected PalmPalm to be one of its third-party suppliers of Embedded Linux operating systems and related software programs for the XScale processors.

PalmPalm has been undertaking the process of optimizing Tynux on Intel's XScale development board since October of 2001, and will supply Embedded Linux along with a variety of application programs in Korea, China, Taiwan, and other areas of Asia, beginning early in 2002. PalmPalm's demonstration of Tynux running on XScale consisted of an XScale development board loaded with PalmPalm's Tynux Embedded Linux along with PalmPalm-developed video and audio players and services for VPN, wireless LAN, CDMA wireless Internet, etc.

Having been kicked off in Seoul on February 19, 2002, Intel's launch of the new XScale processors in Asia will continue in Taiwan on February 22 and in Beijing on February 25. At these events, PalmPalm will present its XScale Linux solutions.
