Intel’s dream: A penguin in every home?
Jul 26, 2000 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsZDNet's John Spooner takes a look at some of Intel's plans to conquer the home entertainment network. From an integrated DVD/TV/Web set-top box, to appliances for video-conferencing, Intel sees the home as a ripe market.
One of the more interesting projects discussed in the article is a game which will model the World Cup Soccer game into an interactive 3D world and allow the viewer to select angles from which to view the game. The game is scheduled to be ready in time for the next World Cup game, in Q1 '01.
So how does Linux impact Intel's plans? Spooner reports that Linux may be used in the Pentium or StrongARM based Media Appliance. In addition, Intel will release a Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) development kit for companies working on Linux-based UPnP projects.
