iPod Linux project “ripped” the bootloader code, ZDNet claims
Mar 3, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsZDNet is reporting that a British engineer involved with the iPod Linux project cracked the iPod's bootloader code by playing it out as a sound and then converting the sound back into code.
According to the ZDNet story, the goal of the Linux on iPod project is to transform the iPod from a commercially controlled device into a consumer-controlled device. The project supports all iPods except the photo, 4G, U2, and Mini iPods. It achieved its first release in February of 2003.
