Japanese companies form their own embedded Linux consortium?
Jul 13, 2000 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsA group of companies in Japan has launched a Japanese embedded Linux organization, according to a report from Reuters/CNNFN. The new organization, dubbed EMBLIX, is completely separate from the efforts of the 100-company Embedded Linux Consortium and seems to have a somewhat different orientation. According to Murry Shohat, interim executive director of the Embedded Linux Consortium (www.embedded-linux.org) the new Japanese group is not affiliated with the ELC and has not formally communicated with the ELC.
The Reuters article says 22 Japanese companies have formed the “Japanese Embedded Linux Consortium”, and that its members “have agreed to jointly develop a Linux-based operating system (OS) for digital electronics products.” The story quotes an unnamed representative of the group as saying “We will call for other companies in Japan and from overseas to participate in the consortium.” Members of the new organization are said to include Sony, Toshiba, NEC Corp, Fujitsu Ltd, Hitachi Ltd, Mitsubishi Electric Corp, and TurboLinux Japan, as well as Waseda University and Toyohashi University of Technology.
A detailed formal announcement is expected to be issued later today. The new organization has a partially implemented website, located at www.emblix.org. The English language pages of the new site are currently not implemented, but the header on the home page is labeled “Japan Embedded Linux Consortium.”
