Apogee Software has revised its Java development and runtime environment, adding J9 virtual machine technology and support for the Real-time Specification for Java. Apogee's Aphelion supports LynuxWorks BlueCat Linux, and targets wireless communication, process control, industrial gateways and monitoring/diagnostics, factory floor automation, automotive, point-of-sale, and consumer devices.

JDE

Aphelion provides a Java development environment (JDE) that includes components from WebSphere Studio Device Developer (WSDD), licensed from IBM's Pervasive Computing division. The JDE also includes components that Apogee developed in-house, including a bytecode/native-code debugger.

According to Apogee, the Aphelion JDE leverages advanced WSDD technology for application portability and code re-usability. It can be used to create and manage projects, code Java applications, and construct, test, debug, and tune executables, the company claims.

JREs

Aphelion includes Java runtime environments (JREs) based on the J9 Virtual Machine (VM) and API class libraries from the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment (WME) and ported by Apogee to various embedded processors running BlueCat Linux, LynuxWorks LynxOS, or Wind River VxWorks. The JREs are optionally compliant with the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ), an industry first for J9 VM technology, Apogee claims.

TimeSys also offers a Java development tool and VM it touts as RTSJ-compliant.

Each Aphelion JRE supports Java applications created with the Aphelion JDE or other J2ME-compatible JDEs. When used with the Aphelion JDE, the JREs support execution and debugging of Java applications during development, resulting in high runtime performance and small footprint, according to Apogee.

Aphelion complies with Sun's J2ME Platform standard, Apogee says.

“Apogee offering leverages the benefits of IBM's Java technologies [and] Apogee's extensive expertise in porting such technologies to various types of embedded systems,” said Bob Morris, vice president of marketing for LynuxWorks.

“Aphelion removes the shortcomings that used to hinder the use of Java for embedded systems, such as slow runtime execution and large run-time footprint,” said George Malek, Chairman and CEO of Apogee.”

Aphelion support for BlueCat Linux was first announced in December, 2001.
